The membership strengthens ABC’s commitment to community-led mangrove restoration, coastal resilience, and biodiversity conservation in Ghana.
Advocates for Biodiversity Conservation (ABC) is proud to announce its official membership in the Global Mangrove Alliance, a global network committed to protecting, restoring, and sustainably managing mangrove ecosystems.
This milestone connects ABC’s work in Ghana to an international community of governments, research institutions, civil society organizations, conservation practitioners, and private-sector partners working to secure the future of mangroves.
Why Mangroves Matter
Mangroves are among the world’s most valuable yet threatened ecosystems. They store significant amounts of carbon, protect coastlines from erosion and storm surges, provide breeding grounds for fish and other aquatic species, support biodiversity, and sustain the livelihoods of coastal communities.
In Ghana, mangroves are particularly important for climate adaptation, fisheries, food security, biodiversity conservation, and local economic development. However, many mangrove areas face increasing pressure from unsustainable harvesting, coastal development, pollution, changing land use, and the effects of climate change.
Protecting and restoring these ecosystems therefore requires coordinated action that combines scientific knowledge, effective policies, community participation, sustainable livelihoods, and long-term monitoring.
How This Membership Will Strengthen ABC’s Mangrove Work
Membership in the Global Mangrove Alliance will help ABC move from largely independent mangrove-related interventions towards a more connected, technically informed, and internationally aligned programme of action.
Through the Alliance, ABC will gain access to global knowledge, restoration approaches, technical expertise, and opportunities to collaborate with organizations working on mangrove conservation around the world.
The membership will strengthen ABC’s work in Ghana by helping us to:
- improve the planning and implementation of community-led mangrove conservation and restoration initiatives;
- apply stronger approaches to mapping, monitoring, and measuring restoration outcomes;
- strengthen the participation of coastal communities, particularly women and young people, in conservation and sustainable livelihood activities;
- develop partnerships for research, technical assistance, project development, and financing;
- connect mangrove restoration with climate adaptation, sustainable fisheries, biodiversity conservation, and livelihood improvement;
- exchange knowledge and practical lessons with mangrove conservation practitioners in other countries; and
- bring the experiences and priorities of Ghana’s coastal communities into regional and global mangrove discussions.
ABC will use this membership to develop a more coordinated mangrove conservation programme in Ghana. This will involve working with coastal communities, government agencies, traditional authorities, research institutions, civil society organizations, and development partners to identify priority landscapes and design interventions that respond to local needs.
The programme will seek to combine ecosystem protection and restoration with sustainable livelihood opportunities, environmental education, biodiversity monitoring, and stronger community participation in the management of mangrove resources.
From Individual Activities to Landscape-Level Impact
Joining the Global Mangrove Alliance represents an opportunity for ABC to increase the scale, quality, visibility, and measurable impact of its mangrove conservation work.
Rather than focusing only on individual planting or restoration activities, ABC intends to promote long-term, landscape-level approaches that address the underlying drivers of mangrove degradation. This includes strengthening local governance, supporting sustainable resource use, improving restoration monitoring, and ensuring that coastal communities receive meaningful social and economic benefits.
International knowledge and technical support from the Alliance will also help ABC apply recognized good practices and develop stronger evidence of the environmental and community benefits generated by its interventions.

ABC is excited to contribute to the goals of the Global Mangrove Alliance while helping to amplify Ghana’s role in mangrove protection and restoration.
We look forward to working with fellow Alliance members, coastal communities, government agencies, researchers, civil society organizations, and development partners to protect and restore mangroves in ways that strengthen biodiversity, improve coastal resilience, support sustainable livelihoods, and benefit future generations.
