TerraFund Landscape Restoration Project
Advocates for Biodiversity Conservation (ABC), through the support of TerraFund and the VIA Foundation, is implementing a transformative landscape restoration initiative in the Lower Bosomtwe Area of Ghana’s Ashanti Region. The project combines ecosystem restoration with sustainable livelihoods, creating a future where healthy forests and thriving communities coexist.
Project Goal
The project aims to restore degraded cocoa landscapes while improving biodiversity, increasing farm productivity, strengthening climate resilience, and creating sustainable economic opportunities for local communities. By integrating ecological restoration with community development, the initiative contributes to Ghana’s environmental and climate commitments while supporting long-term rural livelihoods.
Key Targets
1,250 hectares of degraded landscapes restored
120,000 indigenous and multipurpose trees planted
800 community members directly benefiting from project interventions
150 green jobs created
Promotion of climate-smart cocoa agroforestry and natural forest restoration across the landscape.
Supporting Communities Beyond Restoration
The project extends beyond tree planting by strengthening local livelihoods through:

Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs)
Financial literacy and cooperative management training
Women’s and youth economic empowerment

Building Climate Resilience
Through community participation, biodiversity restoration, and sustainable land management, the project enhances ecological resilience while improving the productivity of cocoa farming systems. It supports nature-based solutions that help communities adapt to climate change and protect critical ecosystems for future generations.
Expected Impact
By the end of implementation, the project will have restored significant portions of Ghana’s cocoa landscape, increased tree cover, strengthened biodiversity conservation, improved household incomes, and empowered communities to become long-term custodians of their natural environment. The initiative also contributes to national restoration goals and climate action commitments while showcasing the power of community-led conservation.
Strengthening Wildlife Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Conservation Education in Ghana
Ghana’s wildlife faces mounting threats from habitat loss, illegal trade, and human-wildlife conflict. The Wildlife Recovery Centres Project builds the national infrastructure needed to rescue, rehabilitate, and return wildlife to the wild — while growing a conservation-literate public.
Deforestation, mining, agricultural expansion, bushfires, and illegal trafficking leave increasing numbers of animals injured, displaced, or confiscated with nowhere to recover. Government agencies and conservation organisations responding to wildlife emergencies routinely face inadequate holding facilities, limited veterinary infrastructure, and no coordinated recovery system. Existing zoological and wildlife facilities also need upgrading to meet modern standards for welfare and ecological management.

To strengthen wildlife rescue, rehabilitation, conservation education, and biodiversity protection systems in Ghana through the development and enhancement of sustainable Wildlife Recovery Centres.
